Old Tavern Museum

The Old Tavern Museum is located in Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County. It was built in the French Colonial style in 1827 by innkeeper William Dunton on a stagecoach route frequented by visitors to what was then the state capitol and in 1835 served as the temporary home of governor John Gayle and his family. It was a private residence from 1882 until 1964, when it was purchased by the Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society. The structure was moved three blocks away to Capitol Park and now serves as a museum interpreting life in the early nineteenth century in Tuscaloosa.
