Alabama Population Growth

This set of maps shows the expansion of population in Alabama from its founding to the height of its economic power derived from slave-based plantation agriculture in 1850. The huge growth in population in the Black Belt, the center of cotton culture in the state, is clearly evident in the deep red band across its middle.
